When he meets Hannah, she seems to lead a simple, quiet life. When he finally gets to know her, he sees that there are layers upon layers of her for him to learn about. Just like seeing the tip of the iceberg in freezing water, Curtis knows there is a lot under the surface waiting to be discovered.
