It Started in Naples, 1960

Clark Gable plays Mike Hamilton, an American lawyer who has to settle his brother’s estate in Naples. His brother has an eight-year-old son Mike didn’t know about who became an orphan when his parents drowned in a boating accident. The boy is being raised by his mother’s sister, a night club singer, played by Sophia Loren.

Sophia Loren and Clark Gable, both very talented actors, had to shine above the beauty of the Italian setting. The 33 year age difference between them didn’t keep the audience from believing in the romance which blossoms as the story moves forward.

Unexpected Blessings

It’s still the month of love. February helps us remember to fall in love again. It’s time to remember that winter is almost over, and spring will be in view soon. Love will have a chance to blossom if we just make room for it in our lives.

Sometimes you plan to have a romance, and then it doesn’t work out. But then there are times when love surprises you. Love can be very powerful when you don’t see it coming.

At Seek God With Me, I’m sharing the story of Ruth and Boaz. He was attending to business, not looking for romance, when he found out that he could have a beautiful wife. It’s a romantic story of how two people get together.

Night Song, 1947

How can a bitter blind man see a woman for who she really is?

Cathy Mallory, played by Merle Oberon, fakes being blind in order to develop a relationship with blind pianist Dan Evans, played by Dana Andrews. Dan, who has a chip on his shoulder, won’t allow her into his small circle of friends at first. She has to be patient and persistent to help him open up to her.

Ethel Barrymore makes a memorable appearance in this film, as do Hoagy Carmichael and Arthur Rubinstein. Eugene Ormandy and the New York Philharmonic also make an appearance.

Waiting for the Day

This week is embraced by lovers as one of the most romantic weeks or weekends of the year. It’s time for Valentine’s Day. This is a time to look back on the relationship you’ve been developing with your spouse or girlfriend/boyfriend.

We can write a heartwarming note to express what the other person has meant to us. We can plan an evening out at a favorite place or do a favorite activity together. Or we could just hand-deliver candy and cards.

Different couples have different styles. We usually do what our loved one is expecting so we can keep our loved ones happy. Some guys like to surprise their wives. Some women plan for days in advance to bring about an event that their guys will enjoy. I think everyone likes a gift that someone has put some thought into. It shows that you’ve been thinking about your loved one. There is a period of waiting. The anticipation builds and adds to the enjoyment.

Today at Seek God With Me, I’m looking at the relationship between Rachel and Jacob. He spent a lot of years anticipating his future with Rachel. He didn’t just go on a date, propose to her, and marry her. He had to work to earn his place as her husband.

Join me and see if you can identify with Jacob’s struggles. Sometimes love isn’t easy.

The Swan, 1956

Grace Kelly plays Princess Alexandra, the young woman who must marry her distant cousin Prince Albert in order to help the family to maintain their royal life. Although she is unbelievably beautiful, he isn’t interested in romancing her. To add to her already challenging situation, she’s fallen in love with a local professor, Dr. Nicholas Agi, played by Louis Jourdan.

If you’ve ever been to see the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, you’ll appreciate the views in this movie, since it was filmed there. They needed a mansion with opulence, but they didn’t have to go to Europe to find one. America happens to have one. A million tourists visit it every year.

Sir Alec Guinness, who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars original trilogy, was intriguing as Prince Albert in this film. This was his first American film.

The year this film was released, Grace Kelly really did become the wife of a prince. She married Prince Rainier of Monaco. The film release date? April 18, 1956 in Los Angeles, California. The wedding was the same date.
